Obituary

Rueben R. Honza, age 88 of New Prague, died peacefully, with his family at his side on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center. Rueben was born on February 8, 1930 in Lanesburgh Township to Rudolf and Ottlina (Schlauderaff) Honza. After graduating from New Prague High School, Rueben entered the US Navy, for which he served both actively and in the reserves. He married Bernice A. Tupy on May 9, 1953 at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church and the couple made their home in New Prague where they raised their four children. Shortly after their marriage, Rueben worked at the City of New Prague Power Plant, then for Minnesota Valley Breeders. He also did a lot of repair work for Cedar Lake Farms during this time. His longest employment, however, was as carpenter for M.A. Mortenson for over 33 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and woodworking but his greatest enjoyment came in travel. He and his wife traveled to all U.S. states, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as 73 countries.

Rueben is survived by his wife, Bernice; daughter, Janell Honza of Lakeville; 3 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Chris Mahowald of Mankato; sister, Irene Overdohl of New Prague. He is preceded in death by his parents; sons, Rodney and Darrell; daughter, Cynthia Mahowald.

Services will be held Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 1 PM at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Henry Koch officiating. Visitation will take place at church 3 hours prior to service beginning at 10 AM. Burial will occur at Friedens Lutheran Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted. Lunch will follow in the fellowship hall.
