Rick Frykman, age 68, of New Prague, died Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at The Lodge on Natchez in Elko New Market, MN after a brief struggle with cancer. Rick was born on May 24, 1947 in Alexandria, MN to Bertil & Ruth (Shurson) Frykman. He was raised in rural Evansville, MN, graduating from Evansville High School. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a B.S. in Education and attained his Masters degree from Bemidji State College. He began his teaching career in New Prague and it was interrupted when he was drafted into the US Army. He married Carol F. Egeland on July 17, 1976 at Bygland Lutheran Church in rural Fisher, MN and the couple made their home in New Prague, where Rick would teach Middle School Science for 34 years. In the school setting, Rick coached football, basketball, baseball, and track, but his love of sports carried over into following sports teams on all levels; Carol would often read him sports scores from the newspaper on their trips to watch their sons’ games in college. He played town team baseball as well.
Rick was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing, particularly duck hunting, which was his favorite. He was a member of Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. Fall of the year was a favorite, not only for the hunting that it provided, but also because of harvest time; he enjoyed helping with harvest on the family farm throughout his life. His activities also included ushering at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, reading voraciously, especially historical novels, and most importantly, spending time with his grandchildren.
Rick is survived by his wife, Carol, of New Prague; sons, Jon (& Alicia) of Hutchinson, and Paul (& Angie) of New Prague; grandchildren, Grady, Emery, Isabella, and Lillian; brother, David of Evansville, MN; parents-in-law, Ernest (Norma) Egeland of Fisher, MN; brothers-in-law, Paul (& Stephanie) Egeland and Mark (& Carol) Egeland, both of Fisher, MN; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Brian Paul Frykman at age 1; sister, Neta Lamp.
