Orvin Swenson, age 92, of New Prague, died Sunday, August 16, 2015, at Augustana Health Care Center in Apple Valley, MN. Orvin was born October 28, 1922, in Fertile, MN to Sven August and Cora (Jacobson) Swenson. He spent his early years in Fertile and attended school at the University of Minnesota Crookston. On January 5, 1952, he married Betty L. Wilson in Odell, Oregon. After marriage, they made their home in Oregon before returning to Fertile, where he farmed for a short time. He worked in Agronomy Research for 29 years at the University of Minnesota Ag Research Center in Rosemount, MN, living in staff housing in Rosemount during that time. Then, just prior to retirement, Orv and Betty moved to Cedar Lake, where they resided for over 40 years. Orvin was involved with the Cedar Lake Improvement Association and a member of the International Order of Good Templars. He was a John Deere enthusiast and collector and enjoyed fishing in Alaska and hunting in Canada.
Orvin is survived by his wife, Betty of New Prague; son, James Swenson (& Jeanne Ghorley) of Rosemount; granddaughters, Erica (& Travis) Sweet of Farmington and Elisa (& Kallan) Nordby of Maple Grove; great-grandchildren, Lola, Stella, Harper, & Olive; sister, Laverne Gibbins of Tucson, AZ; brothers, Carroll (& Joyce) Swenson of Gary, MN and Dennis (& Miriam) Swenson of New Prague. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Alta Loy.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 20, 2015, at Noon at Lakewood Cemetery Chapel in Minneapolis with visitation 1/2 hour prior to service. Reverend Erick Thompson of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New Prague will officiate. Burial will occur at Lakewood Cemetery. Lunch will follow services at the Garden Mausoleum Reception Area at Lakewood Cemetery.
