Monica M. Simon, age 103, of New Prague, died peacefully at home Friday, June 19, 2015. Monica was born December 15, 1911 in New Prague to Martin A. and Monica (Colling) Janda. She graduated from New Prague High School and married John C. Simon on September 22, 1930 in New Prague. The couple owned and operated Simon’s Grocery for many years. Monica was a member of the New Prague Firemen’s auxiliary and Drill Team, the KD’s, and the VFW Auxiliary. She was one of the first women to play high school women’s basketball in New Prague, enjoyed bowling and mushroom picking, and was an avid fisherwoman and Twins fan. Monica lived life to the fullest and on her terms, living independently in her home until her death. She met diversity with strength and resilience and always had a smile on her face. She loved her family and cherished her time with her children and grandchildren.
Monica is survived by her children, Joan (& Carl) Zuk of Fridley, Ron (& Janice) Simon of Jacksonville, FL, Cathy Schoffman of Edina, Monica (& Al) Zabrocki of San Diego, Marty (& Nancy) Simon of New Prague; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Simon of New Prague; 22 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband, John on October 24, 1995; son, John M. Simon; son-in-law, Jack Schoffman; grandchildren, Phillip Simon & Margaret Newman; parents; brother, Martin J. Janda; sister, Adeline Wrabek.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 10 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Kevin Clinton officiating. Visitation will take place Wednesday from 4 – 7 PM and Thursday morning from 7:30 – 9:30 AM at Bruzek Funeral Home. Lunch will follow mass at the Legion Clubroom in New Prague. Burial will occur Friday morning at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
