Obituary

Lawrence Brandel, age 102, of New Prague, died Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague.  Lawrence was born February 12, 1912 at St. George, West Newton Township, Nicollet County, MN to John L. & Kathryn (Dummer) Brandel.  He attended Nicollet County District School and farmed in the Fairfax area.  Lawrence married Angela H. Hartung on June 14, 1937 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Fairfax.  They were married for over 70 years.  The family moved to New Prague, where Lawrence and Angela owned Brandel’s Bar on Main Street.  They moved near Cedar Lake/St. Patrick where they farmed.  Lawrence spent many years bar tending in the New Prague, Jordan, and Montgomery area.  He also worked construction and was a Snap-On Tools Distributor.

Lawrence is survived by daughter, Helen M. Pomije; son, Michael (& Carmen) Brandel; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Brandel; 17 grandchildren: Ken, Ron (& Ruth Hoefs), David, Steven (Will Mehr), Susan (& Todd) Grant, Sandy (& Tim) Penny, Doug (& Tonya), and Dan Pomije, Barb, Tracy Karsseboom, Joe (& Liz), John (& Megan), Jill, Jennifer (& Justin) Staggs, Jim (& Amanda), Philip and Michelle Brandel; 22 great-grandchildren: Josh, Zack, Sadie, Preston, Eliana, CArter and Kirsten Pomije, Shane & Makayla Grant and Erin Lau, Nick, Megan, and Jake Karsseboom, Odelia, Cullen, Madeline, Devin, Zachary, Kory and Jazmin Brandel, Jack and Nova Staggs.  He is preceded in death by his wife Angela on August 2, 2007; son, John; son-in-law, Donald Pomije; great-granddaughter, Baylie Lau; 4 brothers, Henry, John, Louie, & Herbie; 5 sisters, Mary Smith, Ann Gerasch, Agnes Hornig, Helen Mueller, and Sophie Wrede.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Fairfax, MN with Father Jeff Horejsi officiating.  Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00  – 7:00 PM at Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague and at church on Saturday 1 hour prior to service.   Burial is at St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery in Fairfax.
