Lavina Dohmen Svihel, age 93, died Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital New Prague. Lavina was born January 20, 1920 in Helena Township, Scott County, Minnesota to Sigmund & Anna (Schommer) Schmitz. Lavina married Albert F. Dohmen on April 9, 1940 in St. Benedict, MN. Albert died on June 6, 1969. Lavina married Leslie E. Svihel on October 23, 1970 at St. Wenceslaus Church in New Prague. Lavina was born and raised in the St. Benedict area and, following marriage, lived the remainder of her life in New Prague. She worked as a sales clerk at Mickus 5 and Dime, Jerry’s Fairway Foods, Bilek’s Bakery, and West End Liquor. She was a member of Catholic Aid Association and St. Wenceslaus CCW. Lavina enjoyed playing cards with friends and family.
Lavina is survived by her daughter, Helen Pexa of New Prague; step-daughters, Bonita (& Robert) Taraba of Montgomery, Pamela (& Timothy) Dorn of New Prague; grandchildren, Timothy (& Janet) Pexa of Montgomery,Cheryl Pexa of Eagna, Kimberly (& Van) Guentzel of Burnsville; 5 Great-Grandchildren; 2 Great-Great-Grandchildren; sister, Amanda Shimota of New Prague. She is preceded in death by her parents, and 6 brothers, Clarence, Jerome, Erwin, Le Roy, Ralph, & Milo Schmitz.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 8, 2013 with visitation from 9:30 – 11:00 AM also at church. Interment will occur after mass at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Lunch will follow at the KC Hall. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
