Obituary

Helen Proshek, age 98, of Russell, Kansas died Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Main Street Manor in Russell.  Helen was born on the family farm in Lanesburgh Township, Le Sueur County, MN on October 13, 1913 to Anton J. & Johanna (Mikiska) Proshek.  She attended District #61 through 8th Grade and graduated from Sherman High School in Montgomery, MN in 1931.  Following graduation, she worked two summer at Glacier National Park.  She worked in St. Paul, MN as a domestic, in a carpet factory and during WWII in a munitions plant until her youngest brother was drafted.  Helen returned to the farm to help her mother and oldest brother.  THey raised registered Ayrshire dairy cattle, hogs, chickens, ducks and Helen had a state permit to raise Canada geese.  At age 84, Helen moved from the farm to an apartment in Montgomery.  When she was 89, Helen moved to Russell, Kansas to be near her niece and family.

Helen is survived by her niece, Patricia (Don Haberer of Russell, Kansas; nephew, Charles (Barbara) Proshek of Burnsville; niece-i-law, Jacqueline Proshek of Cold Spring; 6 great nephews, 3 great nieces, many great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary, Ann, and Rose; brothers, John, Frank, Jim, George, Louis, and Stanley and infant brother; sister-in-law Dorothy Proshek, & nephew James Proshek.

Graveside Services will be held at 10 AM Friday, September 14, 2012 at the Czech National Cemetery in New Prague.  Her grandfather, Bartos Mikiska was a co-founder of this cemetery.
