Obituary

George Maxa, age 84, of New Prague, died peacefully on Sunday, June 7, 2015, at The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine, MN.  George was born on January 26, 1931 in New Prague to Joseph F. & Emily (Svoboda) Maxa.  He attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School, graduated from New Prague High School, and attended a Vocational Technical School.  He entered the US Army in 1952 and served in Korea, where he would entertain the troops as a member of two army bands.  George married Bernice A. Healey on November 8, 1958 in Kilkenny, MN.  The couple made their home in New Prague, where George worked for Suel Printing as a type-setter, a job that he would hold for almost 60 years.  George was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, and the Knights of Columbus.  Music was important to George his entire life and he, with his saxophone & clarinet, was a member of many bands, including most recently, the New Prague Community Band.  He also spent many years announcing baseball for amateur baseball in New Prague and was a sports writer for The New Prague Times.  In addition, George enjoyed fishing.

George is survived by his wife, Bernice of New Prague; son, Gary of Shakopee; sisters-in-law, Alice Healey of Hastings and Grace Healey of Georgia; brother-in-law, Gordon (& Karen) Healey of Glencoe.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph & Emily (Svoboda) Maxa; step-mother, Mary A. (Zeman) Bastyr Maxa; brother, Joe, Jr. in infancy.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Bruzek Funeral Home with Pastoral Minister, Mary Higgins officiating.  Visitation will take place from 8:00 to 10:00 AM.  Following the service, lunch will be served at the Legion Clubroom in New Prague and burial at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery will follow that afternoon, with military honors conducted.
