Eugene C. Schmid, Sr., age 95, of New Prague, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 at Mala Strana Health Care Center.  Gene was born December 28, 1916 in Springfield,MN to Constant E. and Frances (Bellig) Schmid. He graduated from New Ulm High School and finished his BA degree in Banking and Business by attending night school through the American Banker’s Association program.  Gene married Ordelle A. Flor on October 16, 1939 in New Ulm, MN.  Gene served in the US Navy as a Petty Officer, 2nd Class in Pearl Harbor from 1943 – 1945.  He started working in Cambria and Herman, MN before coming to New Prague in 1938 and settled there to raise his family after his military service.  After retiring as Bank President of State Bank of New Prague in 1972, he worked with his son, Gene, at Schmid Insurance Agency for 3 years before moving permanently to Tucson, AZ.  He was an avid golfer and was passionate about hunting & fishing & the outdoors as well as woodworking.

Gene is survived by his wife, Ordelle, 3 sons: Eugene C. (& Sally) Schmid, Jr., Jon F. (& Fern) Schmid, Brad A. (& Wendy) Schmid; 2 daughters: Lana M. (& Ken) Witt, Donna A. (& Guido) Mann; 14 grandchildren, & 22 Great-Grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by 2 brothers, Samuel & DonnDee; grandson, Jeffrey Schmid, & Granddaughter, Alissa Witt.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church at 10:30 AM on Thursday, Feb. 9th with visitation at church 1 hour prior to mass.  Military rites will be conducted.  NPFD will be present as a group.  Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.  Burial will occur at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.
