Allen Mahowald, age 86, of New Prague, died Wednesday, March 12, 20 14 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. Allen was born February 9, 1928 in New Prague to Ray N. & Ella E. (Weides) Mahowald. He attended St. Wenceslaus School, New Prague High School, and St. Thomas University. Allen served in the Army Reserves and on October 7, 1950, he married Virginia A. Layne in New Prague, where the couple made their home and Allen became the owner/operator of Mahowald Motors. Allen was a resident of New Prague most of his life with a 17-year span in Rio Verde, Arizona. He was a member of the New Prague Chamber of Commerce, New Prague Opportunities, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, New Prague Rotary, New Prague Revitalization, New Prague Business and Professionals, President of MN Auto Dealers Association, New Prague Park Board, Board Member of New Prague Golf Club, Board Member of Cedar Lake Improvement Association, President of Rio Verde Desert Rats, and was the recipient of Time magazine Quality Dealer Award. During retirement in his Arizona years, Allen became an accomplished artist in many mediums but particularly in wood carving, garnering numerous awards.
Allen is survived by his wife, Virginia of New Prague; children, Mark (& Rita) of New Prague, Mary (& John) Kennedy of Summerlan, NV, Kathi (& Jed) Jaffe of Eugene, OR, Jim (& Tery) of New Prague; grandchildren, Kristin (& Jake) Heckenlaible of Plymouth, Paul (& Erin) Kennedy of Fayetteville, AR, Layne Kennedy of Los Angeles, CA, T.J (& Amy) Sybilrud of Summerlan, NV, Sydney Jaffe of Portland, OR, Sam Jaffe of Eugene, OR, Allyn Mahowald of New Prague, Nicholas Mahowald of St. Paul; great-grandchildren, Alexander and Alayna Heckenlaible; sisters, Mary (& Bill) Proshek of New Prague, Margaret (& John) Sexton of Byron, MN; sister-in-law, Patricia Mahowald of Lonsdale; brother-in-law, Dale Swenson of Britt, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dr. LeRoy Mahowald; sisters, Jane Kallal, Rita Swenson.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 9:30 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Kevin Clinton officiating. Visitation will take place at Bruzek Funeral Home on Monday, March 17 from 4 – 7 PM and Tuesday morning from 7:30 – 9:00 AM. Burial will follow Mass at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery; serving as urn bearers will be Allen’s sons, Mark & Jim; Allen’s grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. Lunch will follow at the New Prague Golf Club.
